Frances’ equestrian career started at age 8 in East

Sussex; here she began riding lessons and was soon spending most of her time at the stables.

Her first horse, Jack, arrived when she was 12, and he taught her one of the hardest lessons: how to deal with a cranky horse with a mind of his own. Frances learned that patience and hard work does bring rewards. With Jack, Frances represented her old school, Lewes Old Grammar, in the Schools’ National Showjumping Championships, and competed in one-day events up to Novice level. At this point Frances realised the central importance of flatwork to all other disciplines.

When Jack retired from eventing Frances bought an inexpensive Irish sport horse, Fairyhill Convic (Connie). Frances then met Robbie Carpenter, who was to become her trainer and mentor. Robbie recognised Frances’ ability, and helped her develop Connie into a successful competition horse.

In 2010 Frances bought DG Lutsen (Marley), a 6-year-old pure-bred Friesian. He had done very little, but Frances saw his potential and took a chance. Together they went on to qualify and compete at Regional and National level, at Prelim, Novice, Elementary and Medium level. Marley and Frances won the under-25 Nationals in 2012.

Frances’ current project is Heinz (HH Samba Spring), bought in 2015 as a 4-year old to bring on slowly. After building his confidence at small events over the past couple of years, he qualified for the BD Regional Championships at Merrist Wood on 11 February 2018, and  ….. he won!

Next step - the Nationals…..
